The Department of American Studies is pleased to announce that  Dr. Cheryl LaRoche is the 2011 recipient of the John L. Cotter award for "scholarship that is truly outstanding," with particular focus on her work in expanding our understanding of African diaspora history and heritage.

The Cotter award is named in honor of John Lambert Cotter (1911-1999), a pioneer educator and advocate in historical archaeology.

Dr. Cheryl LaRoche earned her Ph. D. at UM in American Studies and now teaches African American Visual and Material Culture in the department.  She has worked on the African Burial Ground in New York City and has consulted on the Underground Railroad sites in Ohio.
